Welcome to My Blog

This is a blog of my trip around Australia by motorbike. I'll endeavour to keep this updated on a regular basis, but there will be days when I'll have no access to the web. So follow my progress, see some pictures and hopefully share my adventure.

Keep in touch by adding comments to the posts or simply give me some feedback.

Day 04 – Mon, 5 Jul at Carnarvon Gorge

Today was a rest day from riding – well it did involve a 4km gravel road ride from the camp site to the picnic area at the head of the walking tracks. Even this short ride had smiles all round especially after the great help that Phil & Warren gave us on dirt road riding on our recent Nymboida trip.

Anyway it was a rest from riding but not from activity involving some 14km (round trip) of walking through the Gorge – and we did not reach the end of the trails.

DSCN0228We took in the Moss Garden, Art Gallery, Wards Canyon and the Amphitheatre. These are four special locations within the gorge. There are others that we didn’t quite make it to.

The Moss Garden had sandstone walls covered  in moss and ferns and a pool fed by a small water fall. The moss, ferns and liverworts are fed by the constant dripping of water through the rock.

The Art Gallery was the aboriginal painting siteDSCN0226 on huge overhanging rock walls rising 30-40 metres above us.

The special highlight though were Wards Canyon and the Amphitheatre.

The Canyon had huge king ferns growing in a cool canyon constantly being fed by water.

The Amphitheatre I felt was irreverent as it was so quite and almost cathedral like - possibly 15-20m across and completely surrounded by sandstone rock walls rising 30-40m above us. The only way in was through a small slit opening after climbing about 4 flights of stairs. Water constantly flows through the area.

Obviously lots of photos were taken but you just can’t (well I can’t) capture the place on film (well digital card these days). I hope if you are ever passing that you take the time and effort to experience this for yourselves. You will not regret it.
